We are about Career Satisfaction

Career Advice at Your Convenience

The work of the career counselors at Career Illuminators is all about the alignment of people and values. We don’t tell you where your best career choices lie; we help you look within to find out what your true inner needs are. We provide the tools for achieving career satisfaction, but you’re the one who wields them.

Our Partners and Associates are individuals who have operated businesses, led teams and have undergone the same life-changing inner journey that we offer our clients.

Our Mission

Finding career fulfillment is like climbing a mountain; it is a challenging endeavour. It’s not simply a matter of picking any old mountain and climbing it. Not every mountain is appropriate for every person. To choose the right mountain for you to climb, you first need to go through a process of self-examination, considering your fitness level, the team you have to work with (or lack thereof), the tools and supplies you have available, etc. Every year, many people get serious injuries and even die, from attempting to climb Everest and other large, unforgiving mountains because they don’t have the proper fitness levels or the right team and supplies.

It’s the same when you’re trying to find the path to career satisfaction. If you choose a career simply out of convenience, you often end up in a job that isn’t satisfying. This could be because you’re under-qualified and doing substandard work or you’re over-qualified and are continually bored. On the other hand, it could be because your personality doesn’t fit into that type of work place or because the work itself doesn’t interest you enough.

As career counsellors, it is our mission to take our clients through a thorough process of self-examination to find a career that is in line with their interests, skills, values, and personality. We help people with essential career planning, helping them plot out what steps they need to take to be ready to pursue their career of choice. When they’re ready to go after jobs, we help them with career search strategies and with resume writing & interviewing skills. And we continue to work with all our clients every step of the way until they get the right career for them.

Company History

Jim Hayhurst Sr, founding partner of The Right Mountain, founded The Right Mountain originally as the Hayhurst Career Centre, after having sold his original business, a thriving advertising company, in 1985. With a no-compete clause as a result of the sale, it was a perfect time for a career change. But to what? He had no idea, and no idea where to start the search. Jim started off simply volunteering at a local career centre before making the bold move to start his own career counseling company.

In 1988, Jim made another bold decision, to climb Mt. Everest. He was offered the chance to try out for a team that was to attempt the climb. Originally, he said no, imagining that it would be too tough for him. His 20-year-old son, however, was gung-ho on the idea. He listened in as his son talked to the team leader and realized that the challenges presented by the climb were a great metaphor for life and career development. As a result, he changed his mind and decided to join the team with his son.

The experience of climbing Mt. Everest with his son affected Jim so profoundly that he returned to his life and career centre with renewed vigour. He became an active motivational speaker using his experience of climbing Everest as a powerful metaphor. He went on to give hundreds of inspirational talks over the years, which earned himself an international reputation. He eventually renamed his career centre, The Right Mountain, to reflect his Everest metaphor. He also published 2 books, The Right Mountain and Where Have I Gone Right?, that also addressed this metaphor.

The Right Mountain has been going strong for 23 years now. The Right Mountain’s career counselors have given career satisfaction advice to hundreds of people, helping each of them find a career that inspires them. With our recent introduction of video counseling, we hope to inspire even more.
